Short enough that she cannot sort it. Run 4 to 6 cm screens on Side A, 6 to 8 cm on Side B, and the ration stays mixed in the bunk.

Soft, leafy and even. Blends into dairy and beef rations without dusting up like a hammermill flour.

A 10 cm screen makes fluffy, absorbent bedding that spreads clean and soaks up the winter. Boot for scale.

The screen is the machine. Hammers at 2,250 rpm force material through it, and nothing leaves the mill until it fits. That is why a HayBuster chop is set by steel, not by luck.
The sizing rule is simple: double your target. Want a 2 cm chop, install a 4 cm screen. On the H-1000, H-1030 and H-1135 two screen halves run at once, with Side B one or two sizes larger so sized material evacuates and the flow stays consistent. Screens run from 1.5 mm to 500 mm, so the same tub covers flour-fine grain and 20 cm mulch.
That sample box in the photo is rapeseed straw off a 100/120 mm screen pair, ground for a feed mix in Sweden. We measure and label what comes out of the machine, because the length is what you are buying.
Moisture decides more about your grind than horsepower does. Dry straw runs fastest and sizes truest. Above 20 percent moisture, throughput drops, and a small screen slows it further. The fix is not a bigger tractor. It is running the largest screen that still hits your target length.

And if your climate keeps hay damp, tell us. Machine layout matters: on some models the mill placement and discharge handle high moisture better than others, and we would rather point you at the right machine than sell you the wrong one. Straight answers.
The University of Guelph fed gestating cows the same high-straw ration and changed one thing: the chop, from roughly 18 cm down to 5 cm. The cows on the short chop ate 1.43 kg more dry matter per day and held their body condition better. Same feed, different length, different animal.
She sorts a long chop and eats a short one. That is the whole argument for grinding it right, and it is worth real money in intake, milk and condition.
Any machine can chop one bale right. The job is holding that length through the hundredth bale, at pace.
