Grinding Grain
with
HayBuster.

The grain hopper system turns the H-1030, H-1130, and H-1135 tub grinders into high-capacity grain mills. Dry corn, high-moisture corn, wheat, barley, and small grains. One machine on the yard, two jobs done right.

Why Grind Grain With a HayBuster

One machine. Two jobs done right.

The H-1030, H-1130, and H-1135 were built to grind hay and straw at production rates that define the industry. Add the grain hopper and the same machine becomes a high-capacity grain mill, handling dry corn, high-moisture corn, wheat, barley, and small grains, without a second piece of equipment on the yard.

Built on the Flagship Mill

The H-1135 is the current flagship. 88 forged hammers and a hammer mill refined for six decades. The same mill that tears apart hay bales all day turns corn and wheat into uniform feed when you swap in the right screens and install the grain hopper.

Replaces the GP-50

For years, operators who wanted a dedicated grain grinder reached for the HayBuster GP-50, the Grain Pro. It is no longer in production. Its role is now filled by the H-1135 with the grain hopper system. Same capacity. One machine that does everything.

Controlled Feed, No Overload

The grain hopper’s hydraulic feed roller ties directly into the HayBuster governor. It feeds grain into the mill at a controlled rate and automatically slows or stops based on engine load, the same way the tub does when grinding hay. No operator intervention. No bogged-down mill.

No Tub Rotation Needed

When the hopper is in place, the tub does not turn. All the feed control happens in the hopper. That means less wear on the tub drive when running grain, and a much cleaner loading profile for a grain wagon or auger.

The HayBuster Advantage

Precision particle control.

HayBuster leads the industry in particle length sizing. That is the reason dairies, feedlots, and high-moisture corn operations specify HayBuster. The hammer mill drives grain against interchangeable screens that control output particle size. The finer the screen, the finer the grind.

Production Rates by Screen Size

Dry corn throughput.

Tested rates on dry corn, calculated at the standard US corn bushel weight of 25.4 kg (56 lb) at about 15% moisture. Smaller screen, finer grind, lower throughput.

Moisture is a balance, not a penalty. Wet grain in the 25–30% range is the ideal window: the kernel weighs more per cubic metre, so tonnes per hour go up, not down, as long as the screen is sized correctly. Horsepower at the PTO or motor sets the final ceiling.

High-Moisture Corn Performance

High-moisture corn. Same machine. Real numbers.

The grain hopper was engineered first for high-moisture corn harvest, the window where every hour of throughput matters because the bunker has to be packed and sealed before the weather turns. Screens used: 4 mm, 5 mm, or 6 mm depending on target particle size.

The Science of High-Moisture Corn

Why HMC beats dry-rolled corn.

High-moisture corn, ground and packed properly, is one of the most energy-dense and digestible feed options available. Research published by NDSU Extension and confirmed in Nebraska and Missouri feedlot trials shows ruminal and total-tract digestion are higher because fermentation alters the starch-protein matrix in ways dry corn cannot match.

Processing MethodTotal-Tract Starch Digestibility
High-Moisture Corn (ground)~99%
Steam-Flaked Corn~99%
Dry-Rolled Corn~91%
Whole Shelled Corn~78%

Source: UNL BeefWatch, NDSU AS-1182 & AS-1484, published feedlot digestibility research. A feedlot running HMC at 99% captures roughly 8 points more starch value per bushel than one running dry-rolled corn at 91%.

HMC vs. Steam Flaking

Steam-flaked performance. Without the steam plant.

A HayBuster with the grain hopper produces feed that matches flaked corn on starch digestibility, moves yard to yard on its own wheels, and costs a small fraction of what a flaking plant costs to install, before you add the energy bill.

Every farmer who has put up corn silage already understands bunker packing, sealing, and face management. High-moisture corn is the same playbook.

The Grain Hopper System

Engineered for the mill.

The grain hopper is a purpose-built accessory for the H-1030, H-1130, and H-1135. It replaces the tub as the primary intake for grain work. Load a grain cart or auger into the top. The hopper meters corn or wheat into the hammer mill at a governed rate. The stacking conveyor discharges finished product directly into a bunker silo, silage bag, or feed wagon.

The hopper is a welded lower tank with bolted galvanized upper panels. The welded section handles the load at the feed roller; the bolted upper panels keep shipping volume, and freight cost, down for international dealers. A service door gives direct access to the feed mechanism for cleaning between crops. Installation is a one-day job for a dealer technician.

Acid Preservation Option

For dry-grain storage, an acid option.

For operators who want to store ground grain without fermenting it anaerobically, HayBuster offers an optional acid preservation system that integrates with the grain hopper. Propionic acid is metered onto the grain as it passes through the mill, preventing mold and extending shelf life.

Standard Kit

HP20

Simple acid injection pump with flow gauge and calibration. Hoses and fittings included. For operators who want basic acid preservation without complex controls.

Advanced Kit

PDH

Programmable acid pump with potentiometer-based rate adjustment. Dial in precise dosing relative to grain throughput. Best for large operations running multiple moisture levels in a single day.

Optional, not required. The acid kit is not needed for HMC destined for bunker, bag, or oxygen-limiting silo, where fermentation handles preservation. It exists for operators who need ground grain to stay stable outside an anaerobic environment.

Storage & Best Practice

Storage done right. Spoilage done zero.

A HayBuster grinds the grain correctly. Storage is the second half of the equation. NDSU and every major feedlot extension program converge on the same rules for high-moisture corn. Follow them and spoilage is measured in single digits.

Bunker & Trench Silos

Pack It Tight

Best for large volumes in a short window. Pack with a heavy tractor. Target minimum density of 720 kg of dry matter per cubic metre (45 lb/ft³). Keep the face fresh to avoid heating.

Silage Bags & O₂-Limiting Silos

Seal It Out

A bagger fills the plastic bag under pressure, excluding oxygen. Sealed upright silos store at slightly lower moisture, 22–26%. Confirm the structure is rated for HMC before loading.
